National Awarding Committee Chairs meeting. March, 2022
The EuroPsy annual (S)NAC Chairs meeting was held on Friday the 11th of March. The meeting was held online and was chaired by Rosaleen McElvaney (EAC Chair). There was a great turn out from each (S)NAC, including some guests who are interested in joining EuroPsy. It was with a heavy heart that Christoph Steinebach opened the meeting with EFPAs statement about the war on Ukraine. Standing together is a fundamental part of what underlies EuroPsy, and time was spent during the meeting learning more from neighbouring countries about the events in Ukraine and sharing ideas and resources about how psychologists can offer support at this time.
Despite being online, it was great for the chairs to connect and discuss a wide range of projects on-going across Europe. Some exciting new developments were highlighted across EuroPsy members. The Netherlands have made great efforts in promoting the EuroPsy, the NAC now provide a congratulatory letter to each newly qualified psychologist, which also encourages them to apply for the EuroPsy certificate. The NAC in Cyprus have developed a new evaluation of competencies form, this led to a helpful discussion on what paperwork is currently being used by different member associations for this. Progress is being made in Portugal, Cyprus and Slovenia on supervised practice and training. As noted by Rosaleen it is great to see efforts being made to develop supervision training pathways and helping experienced psychologists to develop their supervisory competencies, it is an important component of ensuring the standard and quality of psychologist’s practice.
An update was provided by the on-going work on EuroPsy specialisations, progress is being made by the Sports Psychology division pilot project, with five provisional S-NACs now established. A specialist certificate in Clinical Neuropsychology has now been approved and a call for nominations has just recently gone out. Efforts are being made by the S-EAC in Psychotherapy to encourage other member associations to develop S-NACs in Psychotherapy in their country, good progress is also being made on the conceptual framework they are developing underpinning the specialist certificate.
Ivana and Ruth delivered an important presentation on GDPR. Ivana described that EFPA are working with EY Law, a business law firm, that are assisting to ensure EFPA are GDPR compliant. They are currently in the implementation stage of a three-stage approach.
The chairs meeting concluded with an overview of the symposiums that will be held in Ljubljana later this year. The topics will include supervision, the impact of EuroPsy, and legal regulations across Europe. Despite the meeting being held online, there was a strong theme of unity that flowed throughout. The sharing of perspectives on ethical decision making, resources for supervision training and paperwork, and ideas of how to best implement EuroPsy when there are no regulations for psychology practice in a NAC’s country, were a few examples of discussions between the chairs. It has been a difficult two years, but the EuroPsy has had an important impact across Europe thanks to the hard efforts made by each (S)NAC. This progress has been underpinned by member associations working together to share expertise, experiences and uniting in challenging times as a profession to contribute positively to society.
