Notes from an Istanbul courtroom

 

Stephen Reicher (University of St Andrews: pictured left) with an account of a day spent observing political trials of academics in Turkey, as a member of a delegation from the International Society for Political Psychology. 




 'So far, 523 academics have gone through this process (...) But the sheer scale of the repression can sometimes make us lose focus and lose sight of the human dimension of what is happening. So here, I tell the tale of the trials through the experience of one remarkable young woman in one of the many trials that have been happening almost every day in Turkey for over a year – and which are still far from over. What is happening is enough to make us despair. But, as I hope to show, it ultimately conveys a message of hope…'

Norway - January 2019 - The Norwegian Psychological Association has sent a letter to the Turkish President Erdogan to protest the arrests and sentencing of human rights defenders. 


 ‘The Norwegian Psychological Association is deeply concerned at the information that Dr. Sebnem Korur Fincanci, a prominent human rights defender, medical doctor engaged in care and documentation regarding persons exposed to torture and other human rights violations, and the president of the Human Rights Foundation of Turkey, has been sentenced to two years and six months in prison…’

 Czech Republic:
Erasmus Programme after Brexit: 5 possible scenarios
Czech universities are following the Brexit situation with a degree of anxiety. Most of them are committed to many exchange agreements with a number of universities abroad. Masaryk University, the Czech Republic’s second largest, has 38 bilateral agreements. Over the past three years, almost 450 Masaryk University students have studied the UK, while 40 students from the UK have studied in Brno. Moreover, more than 100 students are currently taking courses in English at faculties of Masaryk University faculties (mainly the Faculty of Medicine).
