The 17th Annual European Congress of Psychology

After a long wait, the 17th Annual European Congress of Psychology successfully took place in Ljubljana, Slovenia this July. Delegates were warmly welcomed by the President of the Slovenian Psychologist’s Association, Marko Vrtovec who opened the congress. With Psychology being one of seven hubs of science, the theme of the congress was focused on the many opportunities but also the great responsibilities that being a hub of science brings.As highlighted by Professor Christoph Steinebach in his opening talk, the congress provides a great opportunity to reflect on the challenges the profession has faced in recent times. It also emphasizes the importance of reflecting on professional competencies, theory and practice whilst keeping an open dialogue with other sciences and professions. Mr. John Ryan, acting director of the European Commission of Public health, also joined the opening ceremony and provided an overview of the increased budgets that have been made available to promote and protect mental health. Mr. Ryan described the importance of building resilience and capacity in the healthcare system as we move forward, which must be reflected in legislation.

Later in the congress Prof. Christoph Steinebach presented a keynote talk asking the question ‘Can a Profession Be Resilient?’. An overview was provided of the role psychologists have played and continue to play in times of rapid transformation and unpredictable change. Reflecting on what we have learned from the Covid-19 pandemic and with rapid changes to our environment, there is a responsibility to bring together what we know and what we have learned, and to disseminate research findings and share knowledge to other professionals and the public.
Necessary and relevant competencies of psychologists across Europe was also a prominent point for discussion during the congress. Within the symposium held on supporting and enhancing cultural and ethnic diversity within psychology, important points were made by Ms. Ulrike de Ponte and Dr. Elke Murdock on the incorporation of teaching on cultural and ethnic diversity within the university curriculum, in order for it to be core to psychology practice, rather than an addition post-qualification. Presentations by Dr. Michal Pitoňák, Dr. Matthew Skinta, Dr. Jasminka Jure and Prof. Iva Žegura outlined the threats and challenges psychological well-being of the LGBTQ+ community in Eastern and Central Europe, the presenters identified some of the areas of competency psychologist can develop to support and advocate for people who are within the LGBTQ+ community.
As the profession has evolved and progressed over the years, there has been recognition for the need to revise EuroPsy standards and competences. EuroPsy is a European standard of education and professional training in Psychology.
As reflected in the many symposiums across the ECP, there have been major developments in psychology practice, education and training which must be documented in the EuroPsy standards. A working group has been set up and a symposium on the directions that are being taken was presented during the congress, which opened up an opportunity for delegates to contribute to the discussion and plans for revision.Overall, the congress was a great success, with over 910 delegates gathering from 72 countries across the three day. The congress provided an important opportunity for the sharing of knowledge and new ideas. There was a great sense of unity throughout the congress, and the theme of working as a profession, drawing on the evidence base and professional competencies to contribute to tackling the challenges faced in society today.

Foretaste of ECP2023 - summer by the sea in Brighton UK

At the closing ceremony of ECP2022 in Ljubljana, Slovenia, the ECP baton was handed to the hosts of ECP2023, the British Psychological Society. Sarb Bajwa, the British Psychological Society Chief Executive, spoke about the theme of the Congress which is Psychology connecting communities for a sustainable world, being on the cusp of a fundamental shift in the global order, and the fundamental connection of the issues to Psychology.

Ljubljana, July 5, 2022
ECP2025 will be held in Cyprus
At the start of the congress week in Ljubljana Eleni Karayianni, President of the Cyprus Psychological Association and Christoph Steinebach, President of EFPA, signed the contract for the European Congress of Psychology 2025.
The ECP 2025 will take place from July 1-4, 2025 in the beautiful city of Paphos, a seaside town on the southwest coast of Cyprus.
