Workshop on Supervision – Training for trainers Designing and running supervisor training courses: Best practice recommendation
May 25, 2018, Brussels
This is invitation-only event:
Workshop facilitator: Dr. Aisling McMahon is a Chartered Clinical Psychologist and Associate Fellow of the Psychological Society of Ireland, and an accredited Psychotherapist and Supervisor with the Irish Association for Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapy (a member of the Irish Council for Psychotherapy). She has 25 years' clinical experience in both the public and private sector and has worked as an Assistant Professor in DCU since 2015.
Having engaged in doctoral and post-doctoral research on supervision since 2010, as well as continued study and development of her own supervisory knowledge and practice, Aisling has enjoyed regularly offering supervisor training workshops for practitioners, presenting papers and workshops on supervision at national
and international conferences, and publishing peer-reviewed articles in this area.
Workshop outline: Supervision has been described as psychology’s “signature pedagogy” (Goodyear, 2007, p. 273) and its “cornerstone of professional development” (Bernard & Goodyear, 2009, p.218). However, it is only relatively recently that the practice of supervision has been understood to be a distinct professional competency, requiring dedicated training in its own right (Falender & Shafranske, 2004). While knowledge is still developing about how to train practitioners best to be supervisors, at this point we have some valuable guidelines from specialist working groups and recent research in this area. This workshop will share current knowledge and recommendations from the literature regarding training supervisors, will offer a recommended outline of a supervisor training course from Aisling’s experience, and will give participants an opportunity to experience some training exercises. In addition, there will be opportunities throughout the day for participants to share and discuss their own experiences and plans in this area.
