Mental health is an integral part of public health. Over the past 25 years, the European Commissionhas supported actions and projects to improve people’s mental health in the EU and beyondincluding the new comprehensive approach to mental health which was published this year. To mark World Mental Health Day on 10 October 2023, the European Commission held a half-day,high-level conference in Brussels, hosted by Stella Kyriakides, European Commissionerfor Health and Food Safety.

On 13 September 2023 in Strasbourg European Commission President Ursula von der Leyendelivered a Stateof the Union address which highlighted some of the European Commission'scurrent prioritiesThe address featured a number of themes including a strong emphasis on the need to addressclimate change, the importance of providing support in relation to the war in Ukraine and the needto be mindful of the effects of Artificial Intelligence on European society.

In her fourth State of the Union (SOTEU) address on 13 September, President Ursula von derLeyen failed to address the still very critical issue of (mental) health within the European Union. Whilst MHE supported the emphasis on social issues and gender equality in thespeech, we noted the absence of attention to mental health in the post-pandemic andpolycrisis era, despite worsening mental health indicators. Our reaction highlighted the EU'sprevious commitment to mental health and its comprehensive approach announced in June2023 but stressed the need for a more defined, long-term action plan. MHE called forelevating mental health as a top EU priority, emphasising its importance for the well-being of EU citizens, social justice and global competitiveness.

Taking place in Porto, Portugal and online on 5-6 September 2023, the Second WHO Symposium on the Future of Health Systems in a Digital Era in the WHO European Region (1) centred on the integration of digital technologies into healthcare systems and their potential impact on healthcare delivery, accessibility, and quality.
The event addressed practice, policy and regulatory considerations related to the digital transformation of health systems, including in relation to mental health.

The European Commission highlights the positive impact of nature on mental health and conservation efforts. Engaging with nature is promoted as a means to enhance well-being while fostering a sense of responsibility towards environmental preservation. The initiative aims to raise awareness about the interconnectedness of mental health and nature conservation.

EFPA was happy to join with the European Brain Council, the European College of Neuropharmacology, EUFAMI, the European Psychiatric Association, the Federation of Neuroscience Societies and GAMIAN Europe in a joint letter to the Minister of Health of Spain, Dr. José Manuel Miñones Conde, regarding the Informal Ministerial Meeting EPSCO (Health) focusing on improving mental health in the EU.
The letter expresses support for the European Commission's recent initiative titled 'A comprehensive approach to mental health,' released on June 7, 2023 which EFPA has responded to. It highlights that one in four people in Europe face mental health issues and that there are unmet needs for mental healthcare despite available interventions. The letter calls for a holistic and inclusive approach to mental health due to its impact on well-being.
