Looking back on ECP 2023

It’s been three weeks since we welcomed the psychological world to Brighton for the European Congress of Psychology 2023. I’m delighted that the event was a highly successful showcase for all that’s great about our discipline.

From the moment that the fantastic Brighton Gay Men’s Chorus took to the stage on Monday evening to kick off our opening ceremony, I saw so many smiling faces around the venue and had the opportunity to take in some fascinating sessions and meet colleagues from around Europe and beyond. We were able to welcome a total of 1,253 delegates through the doors of the Brighton centre across the four days of the conference – thank you to everyone who joined us and helped to make it such an engaging and inclusive event, with 70 countries represented.

We were proud of the scientific programme that we were able to put together, with 699 different presenters involved in delivering 974 sessions which covered the entire breadth of psychology and ensured that there was something for everyone to enjoy. It was also great to see that the traditional British seaside weather didn’t dampen spirits on Tuesday evening, with hundreds braving the rain to join us for the social event on Brighton pier, taking in arcade games, amusement rides and fish and chips.

Hosting the congress has been a fantastic experience for us, and I want to thank the European Federation of Psychologists’ Associations again for putting their faith in us and helping to deliver a successful event. The baton now passes to our colleagues from the Cyprus Psychologists’ Association, which will be hosting the next congress. I’m sure it will be another must-visit showcase of psychology across our continent.

A promise and a task

Reflecting on the British Psychological Society-hosted European Congress of Psychology in Brighton.
August 02, 2023.

In July it was ‘a wrap’ for ECP2023 in Brighton, UK.  Jon Sutton, managing editor of The Psychologist, the British Psychological Society magazine (who was also host of one of the main congress events), offered his reflections on the event in the magazine, and included comment from EFPA President Christoph Steinebach and Vice President Nicola Gale.  Jon’s editorial points to additional reports on the magazine’s website, including Professor Robin Banerjee (University of Sussex) on kindness, Arthur C. Evans Jr (CEO of the APA) on personal and organisational change, Dr Lisa Cameron MP on getting involved with politics, Professor Eva Selenko on poverty and precarity, and more.

The July/August edition which many attendees at the Congress already received in hard copy, heard from the keynote and invited speakers.

“Transforming Psychological Science: the 2030 agenda”

It is a great pleasure to invite you to the 19th European Congress of Psychology. As an ever evolving field, psychology is being called upon to address some intractable challenges based on our understanding of human behavior. From health and well-being, to work and climate crisis, psychological research can undoubtedly contribute to finding solutions.

In coming together as scientists and professionals, we can join hands within our community while developing an outward look to other professionals with whom we can join efforts to address these challenges. And we can do so by putting psychology front and center.

In our congress, we will bring together amazing speakers and engage in high-quality sessions to advance our field and to showcase its usefulness to the world.Pafos is a city rich in history and culture, a true gem of western Cyprus and the eastern Mediterranean. Its backdrop of intercultural discovery and dialogue provide with a unique context wherein we can hold our own psychological dialogues.
